GPS Tracking from home

My wife has generously agreed to meet my party along the trail to drop off food and supplies.

It would be great for her to be able to track me from home so we can meet at the right times and places. Neither of us would like to spend half a day waiting at a trail head for the other.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a way for her to track us from our computer at home?

My mapping crew carries a Spot Tracker. You can use it to send your location home or for a higher fee, to track you all the time. Ours works most of the time.

Not to plug a different site, but I have noticed that postholer.com will map your Spot Tracker on a map of the trail if you set up an account there. Looks pretty easy. I’m probably going to try it later this summer when I do the CT.

I’ve not investigated this, but it might be of interest - trackleaders.com

Here’s an example embedded in a TJ:

I’ve heard upbeat reports about SPOT satellite transmitter, that it helps people rendezvous. It’s a handheld you can buy and you can also subscribe to their “track progress” service so friends and family can view your location on a computer map and know when to begin driving to the rendezvous point. I’ve been told that this not only helps the party at home, but that it can also be a plus for the trail traveler who is more free to modify their pace rather than stick with some predetermined mileage per day. Outdoor shops like REI carry them and here’s the web page on the manufacturer’s site:

Here is a link to current CDT trackleaders data on TopoFusion. This seemed to work much better for us last year than the site at Spot. We fooled around with it in NM this past month but will be using it very seriously when we begin our summer project in June. (CDT-Montana)
