How hard is it to get last minute permits to hike from the South Rim in April? What is a good 3 day hike and how long should it take with permit waiting?

I was able to walk up and get a permit…even got it free. However the day that I walked up to the counter it had snowed 3 feet in flagstaff and there appeared to be many people that decided not to hike.
I did the South Kaidab Trail to Bright Angel Campground then The Bright Angel Trail to Indian Garden Campground and out. To make it a three day you could hike up to CottonWood Campground on the North Kaibab Trail.
I also did a couple of easy side trips such as the River Trail off of Bright Angel Campground. And the MUST see Plateau Piont Trail.
I would add that those who passed up the trail because of the conditions on top missed out on some great hiking. The snow lasted for about 1 mile then it was wonderful.
Have you concidered getting permits to do The Havispiu (Spelling?) It was a great 2 day hike down to there as well. About an hour 1/2 drive down old 66.
Good Luck, have fun!
