Any one out there know anything about this town? Is it a big town? I need to know how far the Greyhound Bus depot is from the trail? Is it an easy place to hitch? Anyone close enough to give me a lift on Tuesday 7/31?

When I headed home from Waynesboro, PA the town that the bus depot in was 12 mies. Then I found it was another 9 to the bus depot. Luckily after a very long walk along the local hwy with no ride offers, a young man in the gas station found me a lift the remainder of the way. Good thing cuz I would have missed the bus.

Great Barrington is fairly spread out. Greyhound stops at Bills Pharmacy at 362 Main STreet. I found hitchin fairly easy in Great Barrington. As a woman it should be even easier for you. Make sure you bring your DEET. Great Barrington was Mosquito Hell last year! I’m told its bad most years. Good luck!

It could be that I’m not 20 anymore but I found to have just as rough a time at getting rides as the guys did. I usually had to walk a few miles before finding a ride. I hardly ever got a ride by putting my thumb out, that didn’t seem to work. I was best a talking to local folks, asking directions and looking all confused and whatnot. (Yogi-ing a ride I guess you could say.) ~hamockhngr~

Hi kids. Sorry we haven’t been on the forum in a while. that after thru hike go back to work fobia I guess.
We also had some trouble hitching in Mass as well as NY, Conn, NJ. These just aren’t “Trail” town areas. The best way by far was to approach people in a well lit open area like in a check out line and start talking about the trail and ask where the best place to get a ride back to it was. Once folks were disarmed by your explanation and they found out that you really weren’t homeless they were cool to offer a lift. Worked almost every time.
