Grizzlies on the Trail

Whats the best defense against grizzlies? Is is bear spray? A whistle? Alumiun cans attached to you bag? Singing at the top of your lungs? Maybe even carrying a big game hand pistol?

Folks, if your scared of the big bad grizzly. Then packing a 454 Cal hand pistol is what you need. During my CDT hike thru MT and WY. I carried for about 900 miles with 13 rounds of ammo.

No grizzly was going to get in my way. If anyone needs a high caliber hand pistol? Shoot me an email and we can work something out in terms of renting/buying.

14oz of steel compared to a 10oz can of bear spray? Wouldn’t you feel more comfortable knowing that you’ll be able to take down a 500 lb animal!!! Or would you rather spray it and run??? I would like to think some folks think highly of there lives. Opposed to how much weight they are carrying in there back pack.

Oh, I forgot to mention we’re currently performing at Wringling Bros. A little shameless self-promotion here…

Myself, Sohne, as well as Shirley, gorgeous, cinnamon-phase 8 year old orphaned griz from BC, all dressed up in matching tutus, and waltzing about the main ring to German oom-pah music. Really puts a smile on the faces of young and old alike. Viva la glasnost!

A 454 cal hand gun weighs a whole lot more than 14 oz. More like two or three lbs, plus, I’m not all that sure how reliable they are against large grizzly bears. It’s a big bullet, but they travel too slow out of the barrel. Plus, someone in Alaska did a study and found that the most frequent response to a bear charge was to throw a prefectly good, and loaded, gun at the bear instead of trying to shoot it. It’s just not a good idea to carry a gun, plus it probably won’t do you any good.

I think the best defense is a little knowledge on bear behaviour and maybe bear spray when that doesn’t work out so well.

If you carry a handgun for defense against a grizzly bear, make sure you file the front sight off. That way, when the bear takes it away from you and shoves it up your a$$, it won’t hurt quite as bad…

Seriously, a little knowledge of bear behavior, what type of terrain/habitat they tend to be in at certain times of the year, and making plenty of noise so they know you are around is by far your best defense. Keeping your food odors down is essential, too.
