Guidebook maps sufficient?

(Already tried the search feature and what I found didn’t answer my questions.)

I am planning on hiking the AZ trail from the Superstitions to Grand Canyon. I took a look at the ‘official guidebook’ at an outfitter here in Flagstaff today to check out the guidebook maps. Could someone who has hiked some (preferably all) the mentioned section give me some feedback on navigational difficulty / necessary maps? They certainly are a bit more compressed than I would prefer, but could be sufficient based on actual trail conditions.

I have thru-hiked several long distance trails including the AT, PCT, JMT, Colorado Trail, and have done numerous other long hikes requiring technical navigation with map and compass. Would an experienced hiker find the maps included in the guidebook sufficient to hike this section? Feedback appreciated.

Dave, I just purchased the maps from the AZT website for $30, they include declination readings, an elevation profile, water, and other info. I am planning on using these paired with the guidebook and get a more detailed map for the sections where the trail isn’t completed yet and will involve cross country hiking. I’m guessing knowing how to use your compass to shoot bearings will be necessary through these sections.

When you heading out? I can’t wait!

Dave - I hiked from Superior (Picketpost) through the Superstitions to Roosevelt Lake using only the guide book -no problem. First part of the Two Bar Ridge Trail was hard to see but well cairned. I also hiked from Pine to Flagstaff using only the guide book - no problem. Some of the tred on the Happy Jack section was hard to see but I could figure out the direction by the book. That’s about all I can help you with on those sections.

Where on the site did you purchase maps? I’m looking but not seeing.

Their map page wasn’t working so they advised me to make a donation of $30 and in the memo line state that you want to purchase the maps.
