Does anyone know how often the AZT guidebook is updated? If I wanted to hike next spring will there be a new edition before then??

Not likely to be any time soon, there is just too much work involved and not enough changes to justify redoing the whole book.
For the most up to date info I would recommend David Hicks E book it is free and I think he keeps it pretty well updated.
You can find a link at the main ATA page at http://www.aztrail.org/
Just went there and they now have a Data book on line and just ask for a small donation from those who down load it. They say they will try to keep it up to date and even ask for updates from the any one out there. This should be just what you are looking for and a great improvement over the printed (out of date the day it is printed) guide book.

Hi She-ra! The AZT has great up-to-minute info at http://www.aztrail.org/ Click on their hiker info. We will be carrying the new on-line data book, their new Pocket maps and the current water guide from http://www.fredgaudetphotography.com/aztrail1.html
We leave Sunday for the AZT and our tj is at http://trailjournals.com/GottaWalk
Star should be out there soon, too. Treehugger started but had foot problems.
Happy hiking!
Marcia

But, Dave Hicks hasn’t maintained this page for a few years now. The information is most definitely OUT OF DATE.

It’s good to have multiple sources to consult, not just to rely on the guidebook. I have been using a combination of the guidebook and data book, and I usually check Dave Hicks’ e-book to see what he says about the area. It’s a good idea to check the guidebook info against the newer data book. A lot of new trail and reroutes have been built since the guidebook was written, which makes the guidebook mileages off in some passages. Also, contacting the individual trail stewards is a great way to find out the latest information on reroutes and trail conditions.
So, you’d be ok buying the current guidebook, but it is by no means a complete source of information.
