Gunnison business mail drop

Does anyone know of any business / location in Gunnison that will accept a food maildrop for a CT thru-hiker and is open between 5 PM and 9 PM on most days of the week?

I hope to use Apple’s help at Lujan to get to Gunnison. It would be great to get back to the trail the same night with Apple at 9 PM but such a quick resupply would be possible only if a business open past 5 PM would accept a mail drop.

I’ll call the hostel in Gunnison tomorrow but if anyone knows of any other ideas, please share!

If you didn’t mind taking a day off you could stay a night at the hostel and return to the trail with me the following night. Gunnison would be a nice break. I have had 70 hikers so far in July. Also 10 horses. :rolleyes APPLE

Hey Apple,

First, thank you trail angelling!

We are staying a night in Salida which is about 5 days away from your camp… 5 days seemed like too short a time to take a break again, especially an all day one… but maybe that’s from the comfort of my home

I noticed that Gunnison also has a sports store… I’ll call them and the hostel and see if either will accept a mail drop. If they do, we’d love to hitch a ride with you at 5 PM, pick up the box and get back with you the same night. (We are 2 hikers).

Not sure when the outfitter closes, but we can be there by 6pm no problem. My experience with the outfitter has been first rate. APPLE in Gunnison at the laundry…

I asked the outfitter yesterday if he accepted mail drops. He didn’t know what I was talking about . Once I explained he said NO. Oh well. I imagine the hostel would accpet them . Not sure. APPLE from 10,000 feet at Lujan

Thanks a lot for asking in person, Apple! Just wondering, which outfitter exactly did you talk to?

I see several online:
Gunnison Sports Outfitters inside the Gene Taylors Sporting Goods store — 201 W. Tomichi Ave

Rock and Roll Sports – 608 West Tomichi Ave

among others… the latter store seems promising since they also carry hiking gear (and we’d need to pick up gas canisters).

Thanks again, Apple. I’ll call the hostel shortly though I’m not sure if we’ll want to stay or get back on the trail the same night.

Apple, how do you manage to have internet on the trail at Lujan? Through a cell phone tower?

It is wierd because there is a rock (where I am now) where Verizon has been strong for 3 years now. We have made a “V” out of white stones to mark it for Verizon. We call it the Shrine of the Immaculate Reception. I belive we are getting the signal from a tower at Ute Pass. My Palm Phone has a built in Hot Spot so anybody within a few yards has free WiFi.Pretty neat. About the outfitter: I would guess it is Gene Taylor since he is close to the center of town. BTW, I can go into town at 8 AM and come back by 11 AM just as easily as 5PM. So if you dont mind spending the night at the end of segment 17 we can hit the town the following morning. Makes no difference really. APPLE

that shrine sounds like a great place!

I called the hostel and it looks like they will accept a mail drop if no signature confirmation is required since there isn’t always someone there to sign for it. i’ll have to call tomorrow again and confirm this.

but it looks like we’ll mail our stuff to the hostel and find apple on the trail mid-august (~ Aug 15 +/- 2 or 3 days…) and see how it goes.

apple, is it possible to buy a gas canister from you? you know, the MSR screw-in kind? We’d be interested in a 12 oz canister… or we could take two 8 oz canisters (I’m talking total weight).

We could pick it up in town as well but was wondering if you keep some with you by any chance.

I dont have any msr gas but we will make sure you get it. (contact offline). Razor Creek is on its last leg. It was still possible to fill a bottle this morning 7/20. APPLE

Water was ample near the beginning of Segment 18 and at Monchego Creek at the 12.9 mile mark on Fri 7/16.

Apple,
Thanks for being such an AWESOME trail angel. Stopped by your Hiker Shelter around noon on July 4, and enjoyed a cold cola. Looked for your guest book to sign, but was not able to find it then. THANKS AGAIN!

Hi Apple,

I won’t be hiking through until mid September and I was hoping you could tell me how hard you think it will be to hitch a ride on 114 and 50 into Gunnison?

There is a fair amount of truck and ranch traffic on 114. It is a large paved road and the only way to get from Sagauche to Gunnison. If someone picks you up at the CT/114 intersection they are probably going to Gunnison. The ranchers in this area are very nice to hikers and leave coolers by the trail. APPLE
