Hammock on the AT

Hi everyone. I currently own a 3 person tent and although I absolutely love this tent Im going to need to lighten this load to a 1 person tent or hammock. Since I already have a hammock and it wouldn't be as costly to get a tarp and bug netting for it as a new tent would be I was wondering if anyone has used this system on the AT and if they had difficulties.

Cheers

So if I get this right, you have a hammock and want to rig up a rain fly and a bug net. I have seen every type of homemade hammock system out on the trail. Sure, you can make it work. You need to fool with it and make it work in your back yard well in advance. If you purchase these 2 items make sure you can send them back in case you don't like the final result.

I've used a home-made hammock for years and will never go back to a tent unless I'm on a tree-less trail. You'll be fine on the AT with a hammock. But you'll definitely need an outer quilt or other insulation or your bottom-side will be cold.

So can anyone tell me where to obtain and what brand of hammock I should use? Can't I just makeshift a fly or is it better to buy one?

I suggest the Hennessee Expedition on the REI web page. Better to buy the rainfly that comes with it. You should practice both setting it up and sleeping in it before your trip.

I have used both the Hennessy and the Clark Jungle hammock. Both are great hammocks but I prefer the Clark because of the side entrance. I just find it easier to get into and out of. Both are light, comfortable and easy to set up.
