Hammock Tent - Appalachian Trail

Has anyone had any experience with the Hennessey Hammock tents. I am looking at purchasing one and so is my son. I think the positive would be the versatility and low impact on camping areas. I would like to know if a sleeping pad would still be necessary in cold weather even if we were using sub zero degree bags. I have more than once considered it but would like to get some opinions.
Thanks all!

I used a Hennessey for 1400 miles last year. I love it! I would recommend it to anyone who typically sleeps on their back and/or side. You do need to use a sleeping pad (a full length Ridge Rest worked best for me) since the weight of your body compresses the sleeping bag beneath you leaving little insulating quality.

I used one from Ga to Maine last year. I think it works better though if you dont tie both ends to the same tree. I didnt figure that one out until I reached N.Y.

I will be ordering 2 of them this evening.
My son is purchasing one and I will be buying and trying the extra large for two people.
Thanks for all the advise, I will let know how they work out.

I guess I am a little bit late on this one. I used a Hammock from Harper’s Ferry to Caratunk, Maine on my thru-hike this last year. While I did like it, there were some downsides. The ultra-light version is not particularly good at keeping out rain. I would be tempted to take the extra few ounces and get the expedition model. You might stay drier.

Hey Bank Robber,
My son actually went for the Expedition and my wife and I chose the Safari Deluxe. I can’t wait to test these hammock tents out.
Ever since I had entered the wilderness, I had wondered when someone would come out with a good hammock tent. On the nice evenings, I would simply sleep in a simple hammock that I could bring along without adding weight to my pack.
My son already did his research on the Expedition and chose the larger rain fly.
