Hanging food - The Colorado Trail

I’m planning to hike from Breck to Durango starting in late June to finish up the CT which I started 2 yrs ago. I am looking at supply points and am thinking about hanging food at the trailhead at Hwy 114(Can’t remember the name of the TH). If you have been through there, is that do’able or a bad idea. I figure it will take me about 2 weeks to get back there from when I hang it.

It’s a terrible idea. Talk to Apple (on this site). He is spending much of his summer at the Lujan Creek Trailhead, which is 2.6 miles north of there. Maybe you could send it to him and pick it up on the way through.

Yes, bearcreek is right. We will be 2 miles north of 114 on the trail for July and August. We will be cacheing food for several folks and you are welcome to do the same or send it to me. Skip the long drive out. I was at Lujan yesterday. 2 deer seemed to have moved in. They were there last year too. APPLE

Wow! That is very generous. I’ll e-mail you for details. I’m pretty inexperienced and this was the real problem that has stumped me. My other supply spots were 50-70 miles apart and this one will keep me from going over 100 miles. Last time I had a 40+ pound pack after supply and I will never do that again. Had to get off the trail in 8 days at Breck. This time I’ve got the base wt.to about 16-18 plus water and food. Terraplane
