In reading the info from GSMNP about hanging all food, it mentions hanging your pack as well. Never encountered that up here in New England. Is that really necessary?? Does anyone do it??

I do not believe it is necessary. I have camped in high activity bear country and would just keep every pocket and zipper on my pack open so any creature can easily look inside and see that it is empty. I had a bear on the JMT check out my pack one night. He just dragged it around a bit looking it over then left it alone when he realized there was no food in it. Other then a torn rain cover he did not hurt the pack at all.

Jarred Gap to Neels Gap a bear cannister is required. I Think they were talking about hanging your food bag.

In the GSMNP a lot of the hikers hang their entire pack up on the bear cable.
