Harper's Ferry/flip flop

My mom, GiGi, is planning on flip-flopping at Harper’s Ferry and either catching a bus or train to Baxter State Park (or thereabouts) and hiking SOBO to Harper’s Ferry. I would appreciate any suggestions on the best way for her to do this. She should be at Harper’s Ferry at the end of May. Thank you for all the wonderful support that she’s received!

Hi Pooh,
She’ll get great help from the ATC folks at Harpers Ferry. Make sure she stops in to get her photo added to the '04 album! Details on phone numbers and bus schedules are in the ALDHA Companion and Wingfoot’s book. You can read the Companion online for free at www.aldha.org. She can take the train as far north as Portland, Maine. Then she’ll need to switch to the bus to Bangor, and take the Cyr Bus line to Medway. That bus leaves at 6PM and gets in at about 7:45. Be advised the nearest bus stop to Katahdin is over 20 miles from the gate. Take the (there’s only one) taxi into Millinocket, stay at the hostel or a motel, then hitch/taxi into Baxter in the morning. I advise calling Baxter Park from Harper’s ferry to reserve a campsite at Katahdin Stream Campground for at least one night. Gigi could also wait and stop in at BSPHQ in Millinocket when she gets there to get a tentsite. HQ’s a great place to yogi a ride to the Park. (Flipfloppers can’t stay at the Birches, only northbounders who hike in from Monson.)hope this helps a bit!

Pooh,

Your mother has picked a great place to take advantage of public transportation.

First, catch a morning commuter train into Union Station in DC. Then, catch Amtrak to South Station in Boston. Once there, catch the bus to Bangor. Transfer to a bus going to Medway. Once there, take a taxi or hitch to Millinocket. It’s a great bus ride. Just sit back and enjoy the video.

Prices on Amtrak are cheaper if purchased 7 days in advance. So, make your train reservation when in Waynesboro. You can usually catch an earlier train without paying extra, but not a later train.
