Harpers Ferry Hitch

Hello all…I am planning on a section hike to finish up Virigina and stop in Harpers Ferry (approx. 200 miles) and I was hoping that someone would know the liklihood of getting a ride in Harpers Ferry back down south to Roanoke Virginia…or is there a bus station nearby? Also, does anybody know about using bleach to purify water and if people are still doing that?
Thanks

FlipFlop, just take the Metro train or Amtrak to DC and the bus station is only 2 blocks away Union Station. From there it should be easy to catch a bus to Roanoke. Just check the Amtrak, Metro and Greyhound websites and print out the schedules ahead of time. The Amtrak into DC from HF is notoriously late by the way, up to 2 Hrs.

That was popular a few years ago, but has apparently (and rightly so) waned in favor of other methods. I don’t have all the facts in front of me, but household bleach apparently degrades and cannot be used in the quantity or time period needed on a long distance hike to get rid of parasites. Undoubtedly someone will contradict me here as they may have had no trouble using bleach for water purification (and for some this is true), but my particular intestinal needs were not served by bleach.

aqua mira is a two bottle chemical solution which seems to have taken the torch from bleach. it is supposedly tasteless and harmless and is lightwieght.

I use bleach and love it. It is easy to find in trail towns usually.

This year marked the first time I had ever used any chemical tx for drinking water. I chose Aqua Mira because of the testimonials read in this and other forums. It Worked! While I am not a chemical engineer I do like good tasting water. The two chemical system apparently does the job of killing the parasites and makes the water taste good. The second chemical “erases” the bleach “flavor” of the first and it just takes 20 minutes (5 + 15) to get a refreshing drink when thirsty.

The convenience of Aqua Mira satisfied my needs.
