Several journals mention this . . . what Happened?
Thumper
Hawaii was a AT Long distance hiker on the trail in 2001. My wife and I heard her relate this in Franklin, NC 20miles or so north of where it happened. She was in her SD ClipFlash tent when she and some nearby friends heard a bear crashing around(literally) in the Rhododendrons downa hill from where they were. She had just called to her friends at the nearby shelter and said"Wow that must be a big one". She then had to stifle a scream when the bear poked it’s head into the vestibule of her tent, 15 inches away, on the other side of the screen. She said it took a couple of deep sniffs and exhaled. It’s breath was malodorous beyond description and she held her breath so long she could hear heartbeat pounding in her ears. It didn’t find any food in the vestibule, and apparently it didn’t smell anything enticing within the rest of the tent because it left and went crashing back into the Night. Good true AT story , huh? I’m sure she would be glad I passed it on to ya…:cheers :cheers
