howdy, all’s well, can see the hayman smoke on the horizon. Somehow I got away from it and was on segment 11 when they had 1-10 closed. even though the weather is great for climbing, I pray for rain. 10 fourteeners bagged so far plus several 12ers and 13ers. Love it out here. Hope hikers get a chance to hit the trail later this season. Ditto with the loneliness, especially since now nobody is behind. Scott, saw your hiker box below massive but was empty. doh. Somebody skip ahead and join me, but be forewwarned I’m really smelling the daisies on this hike.

In leadville and all is fine. minor knee trouble but nothing an off day or so will not fix lol actually 2 off days : ) A friend decided to come meet me later today and so I took an extra day for my “friends benefit”
Also justen and company are also in leadville maybe a day or so behind in actual trail. Plenty of water so far.

just another note, yeah the hikers in front of me are the two guys from tennessee and a guy I met in copper, jason. I think they’re both about a week ahead at this point. Really blasting the afterburners. Glad to hear some folks are behind. The water between leadville and salida is in pretty good shape you all. Some dry stretch near Mt. Princeton. Climbed Antero, Tabegueche and Shavano yesterday, lotsa fun. tight budget, may not be able to stay here tonight, this town is also a bit spread out. Arggh, but good stop if you need it I guess. Scott don’t worry bout the box, glad some hikers got to use it. I meant to say at one point early on that I was only about a day behind you. take it easy -Matt

i wish i would have known you were a day behind me! like i said before i bailed because i was sick of being by myself, but going very light like you (thanks to your help with answering a lot of my questions on this page!) i got my gear (less food and water to just over 10lbs. and it worked out wonderfully! good luck and be safe! if you catch those guys from tennessee tell them i said hey, and i want a rematch in ping-pong! (we found a bar in breck w/ a ping pong table!)

hello from lake city. It seems we’re weaseling out of the fire closures. It’s crazy. Ran into some CDT hikers on this long haul from Salida to Lake City. To those behind, know that it just keeps getting better and better… San Juans rock on! Anyway, Scott, cheers mate, sorry we did not meet up. I too was feeling pretty lonely on the first half, but have hooked up with a friend and all’s well. I hope you get a chance to finish the hike some year, though if ytou do this year, may be awefully hazy, if I had a complaint, that’d be the only one. The smoke this past week has discouraged side-climbing, but all’s well. Happy trails to all, see ya soon.

Last note from the trail, just letting everybody know that the San Juans are looking clear, less haze. Only a week left in paradise… Best wishes.

Hi all - Its great fun to read your entries. I thru-hiked the CDT in '97, and have always wanted to get back for more. Nows my chance, and I planned on hiking in the San Juans at the end of this month. Can anyone tell me what they know of trail conditions due to the fires? any trails closed? air quality, view quality, etc? I’ll probably start at Wolf Creek Pass and head west for a week. Thanks much!

I dunno about the region you’re considering about hiking in right now, but it was closed not too long ago. Abiout views, they are much better in my opinion although a new fire has flared up NW san juans, saw many slurry bombers headed there. I loved Weminuche, which you prbably remeber from CDT, I say you’d be well off hiking in there as trails were still open when I went thru. Anyway, just signing in from… DURANGO. Finished today. Peace all~~
