Help! - Appalachian Trail

I have been searching everywhere for something like a mini computer. I found this thing called Pocketmail, and various handheld things. The problem is I need web access so I can keep using trailjournals.com for my journal and my lycos account for my email. I can’t find anything that has these…I’m really not computer savvy. I was hoping for some type of word program too. Can anyone help me at all? I need to have one for my ongoing research while I’m hiking the AT this year.

You can have your e-mail consolidated with Pocketmail so you can have mail from other accounts sent to your Pocketmail. As for updating your trailjournal most towns have libraries with free internet access. You can write your entries on Pocketmail send them to another e-mail account, copie, paste and done, you’re updated!

We have used PocketMail for writing our trail journals with a lot of success. It solves the email problem (as long as you only need text).

You can send your email using Pocketmail at any payphone or cellphone. The hitch with cell phones is that the phone must be set to analog. If your PocketMail doesn’t work at a pay phone, try turning down the volume on the phone.

Put the word out to your friends that you need a transcriber for your journal. The duties are simple - you get an email; you log onto trail journals and cut/paste the entry. Done. We found friends were competing to get our journal entries and actually wanted to post the entries. Another friend insisted on posting the pictures. That way she got to see the pictures before anyone else.

If you can’t find a friend who wants to post, then post a request on Trail Journals. I’ll bet you find someone to transcribe your journal, especially if it is as simple as cut and paste.

I loved my Blackberry. You can access the internet & it’s easy to use. I often did what Ken describes & sent my journal entry via email to my husband, who would then paste it onto Trail Journals. That saved me time & I didn’t use up so much juice. Good luck!

You might want to shy away from a blackberry unitl we find out how that little patent suit ends up.

Landcruiser… For curiosity, What service provider do you have and what percentage of the time did you have service while on trail?
