Hey man. I don’t know if you get Backpacker magazine or not, but they just wrote a little piece on their top 5 outdoor colleges:

  1. Prescott College (Arizona)
  2. Colorodo Mountain College
  3. U. of Wisconsin-Madison
  4. Audubon Expedition Institute
  5. Dartmouth College

And I just went up to the Adirondacks a month ago and stayed in Serenac Lake. I know there was an outdoor college there, but I forget the name of it.

Well, Alaska isn’t New York, but check out Alaska Pacific University. They have an “Outdoor Studies” or sciences major that teaches you how to be an outdoor guide basically. Backpacking, rock climbing, mountianeering, dog sledding, etc. I’m looking into it myself. Not sure what the website is.:girl

speaking of alaska- sheldon jackson college in sitka has a great outdoor program. or, brevard college in north carolina as a great program also.

outside magazine just did an article about the top 40 outdoor schools. can’t remember if it was talking about schools with great outdoor programs, or schools that have great outdoor stuff nearby.

the outside mag. art. focused on where the schools were located w/emphasis on outdoor activities nearby, but also included mention of those w/outdoor type programs. I think prescott is the AZ school you were thinking of-quite known for their outdoor programs. colorado mt. college is a series of community colleges located around CO, mainly in mt. towns such as Steamboat Springs. one w/outdoor programs which focus on environmental issues is warren wilson, just outside asheville-theirs is a unique work/school/service program. good luck–peace

You might check into Unity College, Unity Maine. A small college, almost a vocational school. Most popular major is the game warden program. All majors are enviromental related, including forestry.

If you want a NY college, how about Paul Smiths in Paul Smiths, NY.

Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minnesota is about as woodsy as you can get. It is located at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. A major relocation in the route North Country National Scenic Trail will pass through Ely, so you can live on a National Scenic Trail too. The outdoor recreation opportunities are endless yearround.

I go to University of Vermont. Very outdoor minded/environmentally friendly school with a town and state to match. One of the best places in the country to go to school in my opinion. 5 minutes from Lake Champlain. Surrounded by the greens, whites, and adirondacks. Outing Club, great Environmental studies and science programs. www.uvm.edu

I used to live in Jeffersonville, VT, which is close to Johnson State College and they offer an outdoor eductation program.

It is minutes from the Long Trail. During the summer, you can work for Smuggler’s Notch Resort as a hiking guide too.
