My wife and I spent a few days in the area in Aug. and have hiked in the region. There are a lot of water falls in the area with short hikes to them. Also, depending on how far you want to drive, there are numerous day hike opportunities on the AT beginning in the Standing Indian area all the way to Wesser, NC (the Nantahala Outdoor Center on Rte 19). The website Jeffrey gave is a great starting point for planning your hike as well as the AT map of the Southern Half of the Nantahala NF. Most hotels and resorts in the Highlands/Cashiers region have hiking maps. If you have never been there, I feel certain you will enjoy your trip and hike(s). Let me know if you want more specific ideas or information. Great hiking, PaPa Larry

A pleasent drive down to the Chattooga River for some good hiking and or rock hopping. Also right outside Cashiers there is Panthertown Valley. Great day hiking with lots of water falls. Get to guide for there and explore the Devils Elbow area.http://www.slickrockexpeditions.com/map_request.htm

Eric, a great hike in the Highlands NC area is the trail up Scaly Mt. It’s several miles long and not too demanding-just very enjoyable and great views. Drive out of Highlands towards Scaly Mt community- you’ll be able to get all the exact directions when you are there, there is a parking area for your car. I’ve done this twice several years ago-Happy hiking! There’s an excellent outfitter store in Highlands that I’m sure can give you all the particulars.
