Hike Naked Day?

There’s nothing wrong in hiking naked if you don’t offend folks. The fact is though, you probably will if you’re parading nude down the AT.

It’s not morally wrong to be nude; in the proper place and time it’s great. But it’s against the law to be nude in public in most places, because that’s the morality of the vast majority of people. As a somewhat more extreme example, a married couple having sex in the privacy of their home is approved by almost everyone, but is probably not appropriate in the middle of the trail.

I think the reaction would be a lot more positive.

I don’t see anything wrong with hiking naked. If you come around a corner and there is a bunch of girlscouts, casually walk back around the corner and put some boxers on and be on your merry way. I’t not like a 10 year old is going to be traumatized by seeing a penis. It’ll be nothing more htan a few giggles.:smokin :cheers

Do what I did, if you dont want to see naked hikers on that one day, Take a zero at the hotel. Also I agree in a way with Lone Wolf, ther are appropriate places to do it. AT hikers are not all THAT. We have to abide by the rules of decency and behave like the guests that we are when we are in the Trail towns.

First, Naked Hiking Day is the summer solitace, June 21.

At that time, most hikers have been out for about 3 months, and are probably somewhere in the mid Atlantic states. The haven’t had much excitement recently. So, this spices up things for them.

Second, I have been on the trail on this day for the past 2 years. I didn’t see anyone doing it. It appears that everyone talks about it beforehad, but then when the day comes everyone has their excuses for not participating.

Was I just in the wrong place both times?

Chief, that’s why it’s not called Naked Towning Day. Although you and Lone Wolf have now thrown down the guntlet (it won’t be me). Peaks and Haiku, in answer to your questions, yes.

…and I thought mooning the Cog Railway was controversial. I am a female hiker that’s hiked naked a few times and it was a blast. Everyone here seems to be upset about running into Girl scout troops, well I ran into a boy scout troop and they didn’t seem to mind. In fact, I’ve run into them a few times since and I’ve become a legend.

I hike naked whenever the mood strikes me. I keep my shorts handy and stuff them under my hip belt to cover my “goods”. I have never not had the time to cover myself up before I ran into another hiker. If they were interested in seeing me naked they had to turn around and see my naked behind.
This seems to me one of those moral badge questions because frankly, the amount of encounters that are negative, or positive for that matter, are negligable. Which side are you on? That seems to be the crux of this thread. I am on the side of the ones that are smiling. Always. Yahtzee

It started raining on my hike naked day in 2001. So I had my pack, my sandals, and my umbrella. Just north of Port Clinton, PA, these bikers come whizzing past. The second takes a double take and says “you thru-hiking” “Yeah” I say “It’s hike naked day” then he says “I noticed” But I had put the umbrella down to cover up, and anwswered acouple more questions before he and his girlfriend kept moving. That way I was still “naked”, but wasn’t (as) offensive. Those umbrellas sure are handy!

of the 1970s? (revealing my age - how time flies) Everyone loved it, nobody complained. But it was rare, and much more public than Nude Day on the AT. Nobone got hurt seeing a streaker, and the same with a nude AT hiker. I bet the prudes here constantly expose themselves and their kids to senseless violence on the tube and think nothing of it. “Make war, not love.” But let someone take their clothes off and …

By the way I have no desire to see any male hikers naked, but if they do Nude Day I’ll just look aside or smile. And I have heard of a few women hiking nude – that’s why the tradition MUST continue.

My take on this issue is simple: if someone were to expose themselves to my kids in a public place, I’d kick 'em where it hurts. Since the AT is a public place…consider yourself warned.

Actually Steve, we do not own a TV…unless you count a computer screen. We don’t like what it portrays, so we opt to not have one. I encourage other folks that complain so much about the garbage they see on TV to do something proactive about their beliefs and unplug the TV. How often do we complain about TV, yet oddly enough, most continue to watch it. It is pretty simple…just pull the plug and then you don’t have to complain.
I don’t see why you have to call people that have a differing opinion than yours “prudes.” Name calling is not needed. Insisting that hike naked day continue soley so that you can view females hiking nude seems to show clearly that the intent is not all “love and peace,” but rather revolves more around desire to see naked women that can be then be viewed as objects rather than a person and how much more disrespectful can that be?

If being a prude means that you are someone who intentionally decides to focus on what is good, what is wholesome, what is beneficial, and what is edifying for all concerned, then I guess that makes me a prude. I choose to take my desires out of the picture in order to build up myself and hopefully others in matters that are good and spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically beneficial. Just please don’t claim to understand my or other folks backgrounds b/c you really don’t know who is what or who has been where. Being “enlighted” is a lot more profound than walking naked. This reminds me of a poem:

“If wisdom’s ways you wisely seek, five things observe with care.
To whom you speak, of whom you speak, and why, and when, and where.”

Well Chops, you just proved our point. Those who are most afraid of some harmless nudity are often those who commit violence and have no sense of humor. I usually scoff at psychiatry (the wholesome, beneficial, edifying smokescreens), but it does appear that some kind or repression is involved in reactions to this really very light hearted issue. Chops, just keep your kids off the trail for one stinking day, can you do that?

Blue Jay

Hey Chops! Violence is not the answer! Would you really attack someone because they are hiking naked? You need some help, man. If you were to kick me, I guess I’d have to turn the other ball. I hope they don’t let you around daycares or lockerrooms.

Oh no! The horror! There’s a troop of girl scouts around the corner and a church group entering the trail head behind me! AHHHH!!:bawling Oh my goodness, what to do if they see me. Really guys, a little nudity never hurt anyone. Being female and eclectic and wiccan to boot, the summer soltice is a reason for me to celebrate it and I might as well by being as natural as they come.

Growing up in the 60’s was a great education for recognizing self-serving little individuals who just happen to believe that what makes their life a easier or more fun is the ‘enlightened’ thing to do.

We live in a society and we should respect each other, hiking naked on the trail or smoking pot on the trail or getting drunk on the trail and not caring who you offend is just another example of petty selfishness and not enlightenment.

If you really just want to do whatever you feel like doing - go live in a cave.

I knew the repressive hostile types would show up on this thread. Take it off hateful people, if you can’t stand to see a naked person on a remote hiking trail you need to go naked more yourself. We love war and violence and seeing bloody mangled bodies on the news, but let someone go naked for a day and certain people freak.
