Did you say nekkid female hikers? Sign me up!!! Oh, sorry… :tongue

We went hiking down in Arizona last year, happened to be Naked Hiking Day…a few of us went for it, albeit with alot of sunscreen on…I semi-weaseled as I put a bandanna through my hip belt in front, as the brutal heat was a bit much on the more sensitive anatomical areas…:happy

See ya on the AT!!

I think hiking naked is pretty inappropriate in most places of the AT…imagine coming face-to-face with a family with young children. You might well frighten them away from ever venturing into the great outdoors again, and that just ain’t right.

It is in June, I only recall one incidence. A hike was hiking on “Hike Naked Day” and was naked all but his bandana over his belt. He met 4 senior ladies on the trail. He acted like nothing was out of the ordinary and just hiked on past them. When he past them he heard on of the ladies say, “big chicken!” You never know.

I agree with Jonna, Hiking naked is inappropriate. I once came apon a naked guy. My friends acted like they didn’t notice. I said  “you’re naked”. He said “yes but I’m cool”. I said “no you’re not”. What if had my daughter with? And I think a single female would feel very uncomfortable. Would a pair of boxers really be asking too much. Especially thruhikers have to act appropriately. I understand quick changing behind the shelter, but to hike naked not knowing who you’re going to run into is just wrong. There are places you can go and be naked with people that don’t mind seeing you genatala flailing around like epileptic snake. As for me I will tell you to put clothes on. Please act responsably, I do believe in hyoh, but you not only could scare or offend someone but you could give thruhikers a bad name. Leave no trace including scarring my memory of your pervertion. Even Wingfoot would know better.

not perverted. The above post is a prime example of the twisted social conditioning that has made our society so miserable. We are ashamed of our very basic nature, and cover it up with material things. Walkie Talkie, you need to see more naked humans. Get back to your roots. Maybe even take your close off yourself.

BS Steve. Try hiking down main street Damascus naked and stop at Dot’s for a beer. You’d be arrested and someone would kick your hippie butt. You probably ain’t got the guts to walk naked in a town.

Maybe I got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning but I get so tired of this me, me ,me. Within this world there is a responsibility to everyone else that some people just seem to want to ignore. Yes there is a hike naked day in June but there are ways to do it with a little dignity and still support it. As far as thru-hikers it is just having fun. I did not do it last year and I most likely will not in the future. But those that did it I believe did it in a way that wasn’t completely compromising. Look at it this way, we are all family out there so would you show up to a family reunion naked. Maybe sparsely dressed as a joke. That is hike naked day, a joke and having fun with it, not a statement for our rights.

I see nothing wrong with hiking naked as long as men don’t do it.

Steve… LW is right. Your attitude is one of the major reasons why AT hikers are having more and more problems in towns and with other non-hikers. You feel that just because you’re an AT hiker it means the rules no longer apply to you. You can do anything you like, anyplace you like, and throw out the old HYOH to justify your actions. WRONG!!! HYOH also means that we hikers call others on their actions when it is detrimental to the entire hiking community. Hike Naked Day is a perfect example of that. Your feeling that you can do what ever you like can have major effects on others. What happens if you round a corner and run into a group of Girl Scouts? Maybe the rest of us don’t want to see you naked. What about our rights to enjoy the trail without wondering if you’re some kind of pervert. Grow up. If you want to be naked, there are plenty of appropriate places to do so. The trail just ain’t one of them.

Folks,

There’s a place for naked hiking, but most places on the AT ain’t it. Do I hike naked? Sure, but just in areas that there’s virtually no chance of running into families, solo females, etc. Social norms or not, thru-hikers need to understand that they are representing the AT to others who have no idea what the experience and comraderie is like. IMO, naked hiking day on the AT has given more black eyes to the AT than it’s given back. Take some responsibility ane think of the larger picture.

What a world. It’s OK to see thousands of people killing each other on TV. We’re about ready to kill thousands for oil. Let me tell you something, seeing a few naked hikers will not hurt anyone. Not old ladies, not children, not anyone. Hide under your beds on June 21st.

If a little girl sees a man naked she will never get over the trama but if a little boy sees a woman naked he just got lucky. ???

by having a hike naked day on the A.T. I’m not talking about walking naked in town, but on the trail for one day of the year. If you’re so squeamish about the human body that you can’t stand to see a few bare hikers, stay away!

Even though I have done it, i have to agree with alot of the posts above. Doing it with a similar minded group, where others will not see you (others being families on outings, dayhikers, townfolk, etc) is ok, but if people who might not understand it even might see you, then don’t. We did it in an area where the chances of being spotted were extremely minimal, and nopbody did see it save those in the group. All I am saying is, act repsonsibly.

This topic is a good one. I personally feel that we should be able to walk around naked if we chose, were only animals. The fact is society conditions us to believe that’s completely irrational (and illegal) behavior. I think the idea a naked hike day is fine in concept, but in reality it could make some people feel really uncomfortable.

What’s the harm of going raw on the AT on Naked Day? Nothing to anyone. We’re a sick society that trives on violence and warfare but can’t stand to see a person au natural. And what about hot springs, you want to impose a clothes only policy there too? Freaks.

I don’t want nudity or war, but I especially did not mean to offend any epileptic snakes. Some of my best freinds are epileptic snakes.

Blue stone, steve, et al…
In our selfishness we can change what is natural into something that is unnatural. We convince ourselves that just because we feel or think something, that it is natural, therefore it is “good.” Yet, many of our natural tendancies are not good…in that our unhealthy interest in them has resulted in a natural act being transformed into an unnatural interest. Discipline, self control, and doing what is right are acts that are not necessarily “natural.” For example, children “naturally” tend to want to grab toys that aren’t theirs, tend to not want to share, have been known to not tell the truth about who ate the cookies in the cookie jar, etc. Yet, we will be better people if we overcome these “natural” tendancies. Selfless love is not necassarily a natural act for humans, yet we must overcome what is “natural” and act in the “supernatural.”
My point is that we should not be fooled into thinking that all that is “natural” is actually “good.” Surely there are more profound, meaningful, and lasting ways to make your mark on the world.
