Can one hike up springer and back down in a day?

Most can. From the Visitors Center at Amicalola Falls SP it’s about a 17.5 mile round trip. You can knock about 2.5 miles off that if you start up by the Lodge. You also could drive up to where USFS 42 crosses the AT. Springer is just a mile from there.

My wife did her very first hiking trip from the Visitor Center to Springer and back in the same day and it took her roughly 6.5 hours.

Personally, I couldn’t do it, even when I had my trail legs! Maybe without a pack… Don’t underestimate that climb
from the Visitor Center. It would be more fun to hike up, stay overnight at either the Springer shelter or the one near Springer on the Approach Trail, and then hike back the next day. You could even take the Hike Inn Trail coming back down for a change in scenery.
