Does anyone know if there are abundant hiker boxes on the PCT. I just ask because I love them and will be hiking the PCT this coming summer and was curious. The ones on the AT were great and so amazing!

Well if you start early as you posted there are no hiker boxes then except maby at Aqua Dulce… most of the boxes are tossed at the end of the season or given away cause they take up space…

Hiker boxes are almost everywhere hikers ship themselves food/gear. There are someplaces that keep it hidden so to keep regular customers out of them or to just keep it out of the way. Some spots I remember good hiker boxes are, the Sauffley’s in Aqua dulce, the nature inn at Big bear, the andersons, the mountain hardware store in wrigtwood, Kennedy meadows store (where I found 9-year expired MRE’s that were delicious!),Fish lake resort, Elk lake resort, the Mazama store at crater lake (big hiker box), the free campground at cascade locks, P.o in cascade locks, p.o in stehekin, the Dinsmores in Skykomish, , Gas station at White Pass WA, Resort at Snoqualmie WA. Those are just a handful of the major boxes I remember. I think they are a great resource/idea to keep food out of the dumpsters. Some businesses on the trail don’t want anything to do with hiker boxes. Echo Lake resort will throw your dontations in the trash, I saw them do it. I also found a waterlogged cardboard box full of food just around the corner of that resort someone had put there to pass on to fellow hikers. A similiar box was sitting at Sonora Pass because the Northern Kennedy meadows has a similiar policy as Echo Lk. In general you have to ask for the box. Just watch out for the tainted peanut butter.

I also watched the hiker box being thrown out at Echo Lake. The response I got was we don’t need thru hikers or their old food. Wait until you hit South Lake Tahoe F’em
