hello. i hiked southern Ca in 2005 and plan on hiking through this year. I have kinda gathered that the hiker oasis is not open anymore from the lack of info posted. but in 2005 i heard that they were building showers and had a nice open lawn for j=hikers so I thought i would ask what the internet cannot answer, is the hiker oasis still around? if they have gone underground just wink or something and all is well. throw me a sign.

i was hoping to send a package their as to avoid going into idyllwild. maybe the hitch from the paridise cafe. gotta stay away from jose.

Creepy, I hesitated to speak up about Hikers Oasis because I don’t know THIS year’s situation with them. I stayed there in 2005. Dear and Ziggy are terrific folks. Love 'em both. Yes, nice showers and restrooms as you mention. Last year they let it be known that they weren’t hosting hikers anymore and that someone else took over the water cache duties. I happened to run into them last year (2006) as I hiked through and had dinner with them. I don’t believe from the conversation then that they were going to be doing it anymore. Again, I don’t know the current situation, but if it were me, I’d plan on other solutions. FWIW,

I can tell you when Pearson and I saw that dang plastic Flamingo bird out in the middle of some heatstroke baking sack of hot it was the most humor filled, spirit lifting wild-aze image we’d come across in the desert. Man did that Flamingo make us feel good.

If you can believe our good fortune, there were actually cold beers in the cooler behind that Flamingo! What a stroke of luck. Miller Genuine Draft as I recall. Considering I’d drank liters of cowpie water not too many hours before that (and was thankful for the cowpie water), MGD beer was a fantastic unbelieveable godsend.

We’d slept that cold night next to the Flamingo and got up at 4:30am to start hiking again and avoid the heat (we both had balaclava’s on when we’d left the Flamingo’s brush cave, Ha). I took photos of Pearson coming out of the brush cave next to the Flamingo and skeleton at 4:30am. We laughed and laughed.

The Andersons have the biggest hearts. The nicest of people and I don’t know how we would have made it through that stretch of the beating desert without their help.

If I have a vote. they will be in Heaven.
