HikerTrash Pacific Crest Trail Workbook

Are you thru hiking the PCT in 2012? We are looking to gather a dozen hikers to work with this winter in hopes of creating a FREE-TO-USE Workbook. This will be a organization tool and contain all the information one would need to plan a successful thru-hike. If you would like to use this Workbook and be willing to tell us the honest truth of what you really think, please send us an email. Include you name, phone number, and age in the email. The first draft will be sent to the editor mid October. The plan is to print a dozen copies, and send them out to hikers the following month. We will take the input and send the second draft to another editor in time for a final print by the New Year. The only drawback is the dozen volunteers will be expected to cover the cost of materials and shipping, most likely $8. Once the final print is made there will be a FREE-TO-USE PDF online and a $8 hard copy available. We are NOT trying to make a buck, but time is the only resource that we have. Last year HikerTrash Gear was just a few custom backpacks, we want to be more. Not less broke, but more helpful.

just curious, with all the existing info out there why do you feel we need another. One good way to plan is to read a few journals from recent years and use that as a guide. Good luck but I’m already drowning in information.

I tend to agree with Bamboo Bob. I started looking at hiking the PCT in 2012 a year ago. With all that is available on the Internet, I hit information overload long ago.

Mr. Bob, you are absolutely right. There is a lot of information out there to sift through. Our goal is to have all of the information in one collection, including the documents, permit forms, town maps, resupply planning, training info, planning calender… anything that would be needed. This will be a straight forward approach, not a bunch of chatter. Most of the journals available are great for the spirit but we hope to do more for the preparation portion. We are apart of a great community! If a newbie could download ($0) or order ($8?) this workbook and print Halfmile’s maps, be 100% ready without any other time on the internet, then we have done our job. For those 2012 thru-hikers that have already done quite a bit of planning, please read through the Workbook once available online (January 1st) and lets us know if we missed something. This is an open source style project, it is only as good as the contributors. Tarmanmf, when I was getting ready for my thru-hike, overload hit me a few times. Over planning, list making, calender marking, and obsessive charts are my style. Hip is more of the wing-it cause it’s too darn complicated person. So we are finding the halfway point anyone could follow without the need of outside resources.

So here is a little sample of what this Workbook is going to look like. Please understand that this is not even at first draft stage. And please don’t slam us for trying to help, really.

I will be looking for it the first of next year, but I won’t be doing the PCT until 2015, that will be my 50th year. I am planing on hikes the next few years to get ready for it, The wonderland trail, the JMT, the the PNT, and Finally the PCT. After that who knows, AT & CDT??

I hope you get some help on this project, I think it would be helpful to have the basic information in one location or document.

Update!

The Workbook would be ready to ship on the December 3rd for anyone who wants to help with the final draft of the year. Participation is easy. Email us your name, email, address, age, and phone number. Receive a copy of the Workbook. Send the six-to-eight bucks to cover the cost of the copy&shipping, with a summery of what needs to be changed and what needs to be added. We will take all input into account to modify the Workbook and post as a free PDF online in January 2012. We will also have the updated version that was sent to you for the same cost only price, six-eight bucks.
