Are there enough changes to the AT this year to warrant purchasing a new guide book for 2k4?

It depends on how old your present book is… you didn’t say.

There are changes every year on the Trail (like new shelters, etc). and even more changes in Trail towns–new services, new busineses, changes among older establshed ones, etc. If you’ve got a 2002 or 2003 Companion or Handbook, probably 95% of the information is current and still trustworthy, but then again, that 5% might be important. Off the top of my head, I can think of all sorts of changes this year since 2002—some new outfitters, hostels, places to lodge, etc.

You’ll probably do OK with a recent guide, but to be on the safe side, I’d buy the latest one you can find. This way you’re assured of having the most up-to-date information available.
