I am looking for a hiking buddy for the JMT. I have two permits starting on July 24 at Tuolumne Meadows and ending on August 4th. I plan on averaging 20 miles a day. I can provide more information if you are intrested. I am a teacher/coach.

Possibly interested.I’m guessing you are an experienced hiker? I consider myself an intermediate hiker.Would you consider hiking with someone like myself who does more like 15 miles a day or are you on a time limit?

Thanks guys. I hiked 10 days on the AT last summer and averaged 28 a day. I did Whitney last summer on the one day permit and the AT was much tougher. I told some people that and they could not believe it but the AT is so much up and down and is not near as scenic as Whitney was. There is something about not ever seeing the sun that wears on you. I need to be out on the 3rd because I have a wedding to get to, so yes I am on a time limit. I have read so much about hiking solo that I don’t feel that will be a problem but it is always nice to ahve someone to chat with.

We have our permits and will start the JMT on July 21, heading SOBO from Happy Iles. I hope we see you out there.

I also hiked the AT and have a dream to hike the JMT. What section of the AT did you hike? I am really interested in your comments about the difficulty of the AT compared to the JMT. I have never hiked at an altitude over 6000 ft so I worry about altitude sickness on the JMT. I averaged 20 miles/day on the AT, 25 - 30 in the south and 15 - 17 in NH and southern Maine. I have been a marathon runner for many years. The thought of doing the JMT at a pace of 20 miles/day is very exciting, I just am not sure I could maintain that pace.

Bob, I hiked the Tennessee section last summer and on aseperate trip did the Georgia section starting at Amicalola Falls. The beginning section at the falls when you go up the steps is brutal at 5am. The rst of the hike ( in my opinion) is…for lack of a better term, dark compared to Whitney. You are constently going up and down which is really hard on the knees and are in shade 80% of the time. It is cooler with the shade but the scenery never changes. I found Whitney to be so much more scenic and exciting, thus my wanting to do the JMT. I look at the pics of the JMT and they are breathtaking. If I ahd taken pics of the AT they would all look the same. There are spots that are of course breathtaking also but just not the abundance you find in the Sierras. Starting at the Meadows I am betting I will see the Troverts on the 24th of 25th. I hope so.

Relatively inexperienced with through-hiking, but in pretty good shape. 22 years old, male, just graduated college. Looking for a hiking partner for the John Muir trail this summer, 2013.
Please email me if you’re looking for a hiking partner
