Anyone know where I can get a kilt made or a pre made kilt for hiking in?
Big Boy

My wife made this cool skort from Goretex. A nice fashionable wrap skirt that sheds rain. Only comes in black and is mini length. Very cool. So I have to ask; do you guys wear anything under them and if not how do you keep the DPGs away?

don’t the patterns and colors have something to do with ancestry? how would you know what pattern to buy? any clues?

Can’t go wrong with your coat-of-arms. A little hard to replicate but if you know someone that does batik (sp batique, a wax and dye job in layers to form the print)your in. I have a friend in town that does it and it will cost you but she can do anything with wax.

Mountain Hardwear makes a sweet hiking kilt. I’ve been using it for about 6 months now and I don’t think I wear anything else in warm weather again. And, no you shouldn’t wear anything else. The Mountain Kilt has a nifty privacy snap feature to use while you’re in camp.

I wouldn’t recommend a UtiliKilt, because it’s made of cotton. I have ordered one (should be at my door when I get home tonight) for wearing when I’m not hiking in the rain, though. I have a Sport Kilt, and I’m also looking into a Bear Kilt, which is also made of a poly fabric, and is supposed to be much better quality than the Sport Kilt.
Either way, you’ll find me in a kilt on Springer on 1 March.

For those considering the mountain hardwear kilt - backpacker magazine did a review you might want to check out…

since the mountain hardware ‘kilt’ has no pleats, its a skirt or a wrap. with pleats you get better stride without restriction.

I’ve been hiking in the Utilikilt for about 4 months. It’s got pockets and the pleats are sewn so you don’t lose them over time. And it is 65% poly 35% cotton. Mine dries fairly quickly.

I got my UtiliKilt last night. It’s a bit stiff; I’ll have to wash it and see how it breaks in, but it’s otherwise comfortable. I’d want to wear it out in the rain to see how it responds to water before considering hiking in it, but it’s 10 degrees F out today, so maybe I’ll wait a bit. =)

hey haiks hows it compare to a sportkilt…
im still more partial to my proper wollen job than the nylon sportkilt but its… well… heavy
(hangs properly tho…)

I hear you Haiku. The coldest I’ve tried mine is 34 degrees F. and considering I was wearing it regimental. Was a tad bit chilly. Yeah I’m still trying to decide on what kilt to go with. Let me know what you think of it.

I have got to check this out. At first I was skeptical but they sure look comfy. Do they help on chaffing?:cheers

The UtiliKilt is far stiffer/heavier than the Sport Kilt. No worries about the back flying up in a heavy wind. That said, it’s heavier than a Sport Kilt, so I still don’t know if I’d wear it on the AT. For general use, though, I quite like it - I’ve been wearing it about the house for the past couple days. I’d love to have a proper woolen kilt in my Irish tartan (Co. Longford), but cost will keep me waiting a while longer.
