May is a great time to hike NH and Maine but here is the deal. You will still have lots of snow at elevation. On the AT for the most part the trail is packed enough that post holeing should not be a problem but if it gets warm enough during the day be prepared to go through occasionally. I would recommend bringing instep crampons as you may hit some icy spots. You can usually get around them but the crampons are light weight insurance. The biggest problem will probably be water crossings. On a warm day or heavy rains the brooks will be pretty high. The Mahoosic Notch will be full of snow and ice. It could be so full that crossing will actually be easier or it could be treacherous. I’ve only gone through it in the summer so I do not know. It will also get pretty cold at times so be prepared. I personally love backpacking in NH and Maine in early May you just have to be prepared for anything. Have a great trip.

Early May is still mud season in the White Mountains. A hiker can do a lot of damage to the trail while the frost is coming out of the ground, and the soil is still soft. I’d suggest delaying until Memorial Day.
