Does anybody know of any stories about people hiking the AT on 9/11/2001?... I couldn't imagine being clueless and seeing the Twin Towers from the AT after the attacks... But anywhere on the trail, I can only imagine the feelings when people heard...

I remember reading a lot of the pct journals for that time the shock some got when they reached a trail down was heartbreaking.

I was on my thru on 9-11-01. I was hiking SOBO. Spent the night of 9-10 in the ski patrol building on top of Stratton, VT with 4 others. Got a late start in the AM because of rain. Around 11AM I decided to listen to a small radio I had. I cliped it to my pack and put the ear buds in. Not paying much attention to what was on the radio, I was trying to get some music. I don't remember what was said, but the thought went through my mind that an A bomb had been dropped on NY city. I stopped to listen. I was all alone. My first thought was to get to a phone and call home. I decided to head for Bennington. On my way down the trail I met two couples, day hiking. I asked them if they had heard about what had happened in New York. When I told them one of them said; "What the hell you been smokeing?" Then they laughed.

I got to a phone and called home and talked to my wife. At that point I had about 400 more miles to go to finish the AT. I didn’t know what was in the future. I got a motel room and was glued to the TV. I did a lot of deep thinking that night. I called my wife in the morning. Because I live in Connecticut and would only be a few hours from home and could get back if required I decided to continue.
For the next several days I saw knowone on the trail. I was alone, having knowone to discuss what was happening in the world. It was a lonely time for me.
I finished my AT journey Oct. 12, 2001 in Duncannon, PA. I had flipped to Maine from there on July 12.

...i've always wondered about that, too....tryin' to imagine what it would have been like.....i remember the views from the trail in that area...(totally able to see NYC)....and though i have imagined that there could have been a few late-ish thruhikers coming through there, the time of day probably wouldn't have found many hikers right on the top of bear mtn or black mountain when the attacks occurred (unless they went up for the sunrise)......but my oh my!...what they might have seen!....

(i guess most folks were kind of glued to there “media” that day)
