I’m going to try and get Pennsylvani hiked this year and a friend is going to join me for a week. My goal is to sart at Pen Mar - Can I leave my car thier? And hike to Boiling Springs - with the hope that my friend can get a taxi or something to pick up thier car at Pen Mar and go home. Is this workable?

Bramble thinks that there isn’t any overnight parking at PenMar. We do believe that Boiling Springs has some shuttles either by the folks at the ATC office if they’re available, past folks there have been hikers themselves, give call 717-258-5771 or one of the B+Bs. You could park in B.S. and get a ride back down to PenMar?

There IS parking in Pen Mar. Park officials ask AT hikers to park in field across the street from the park, and my shuttle and others I talked to said my car would be safe. I parked for 4 days without difficulty

We had a bad experience @ PenMar in 02 as thru-hikers. Granted, we were camped in one of the pavilions which is officially off limits, but had been sanctioned by the park dude (I don’t know his title, but he seemed to have authority). He warned us we might have teens partying (drinking we thought). Wrong-we had 20-somethings, selling drugs (and trying to buy Oxy from us-like hikers would be carrying narcotics!?) around midnight. It was one of the only times I was scared on my hike, we packed up @ 2am and hiked out. I really wanted to call back to the park after we left there and tell them what really happens after hours, but as things work on the trail, several days later when you reach a phone, it was no longer high on my list. :oh

If you go to Waynesboro PA which is about 15 miles (mostly main road) from PENMAR line there are places to park and even an Enterprise car rental there if that would help. You could go to PENMAR line and then backtrack to Waynesboro and try to hitchhike or have a long day of hiking.
