I’m planning a thru hike GA to ME early March 2004.
I had a hiking partner but now they can’t go. I was hoping to find someome else.
Do you think I could find one better at the start at Springer?

I wouldn’t worry about a partner. There are more female solo hikers this year than any other time. On my section hike in April, it was pretty much 50/50 and sometimes the women outnumbered the men at the shelters. The best thing to do is start hiking and you will meet up with others that are hiking at the same pace as you. It’s hard to start with a partner because you two may hike at different paces. One will want to push on while the other is wore out and ready to stop. I ran into a guy, off and on at the shelters, that ended up having to wait 2 days at Hiawassee just for his partner to catch up so he could give him his share of the mail drop. Personally, I like going solo since you have the freedom to do what you want to do, when you want to do it and don’t have to worry about keeping up with or losing a partner. The trail is busy and the shelters are full, so finding someone along the way to hike with and share a room with in towns is easy. Just hike your own hike and enjoy it…

Heyya,
Seeking a partner to start a thru-hike beginning at Mt. Katadin. I will start July 7th and finish hopefully Dec 7th in Georgia

Concur completely with Nooga on this subject. A partner will either slow you down or speed you up. Best to hookup with someone you like, who is hiking your speed on the trail. This naturally happens all the time on the AT. Also you may change partners several times during the hike. Rocket and Bono started together, then Rocket hooked up with the Flying Scotsman, now the Flying Scotsman is hiking solo since he is so far ahead of everyone else on the trail. I’d just let it happen, hike your own hike, you’ll find a partner or several along your hike (if you hike NOBO and in season like most other hikers—SOBO may have a problem finding a partner on the trail at any time of year since so few hike SOBO), and make lots of new friends.

It’s best to find a hiking partner along the way. Most people don’t stay with the person they start with unless they’re married. Sometimes the trail and it’s pressures puts a strain marriages. I started solo and hiked with several people for about a month. However, we didn’t have the same ideas for our hike and spilt up. Remember to hike your own hike. If you have a partner they will have their own agenda which may or not be compatiable with yours. Starting NoBO you’ll meet plenty of people especially if you start in March/ early april.
