Anyone hike in sandals such as Chaco, Teva or Keen? Looking for an alternative to blisters and swollen footsies ~

I have for only short periods of time. I used my Keen sandals which worked out fine except for pieces of dirt that would constantly get under my foot. I saw several hikers who hike in sandals on my 2000 hike who seemed to enjoy it and did not appear to be having any problems.

Yes, I switched to sandals to avoid foot problems. It's been pure bliss since, distances of 800 miles in a row wearing them (several pairs). 1600 miles total in 2011.

I use Teva Toachi 2. Your style may vary. DO NOT buy them from a cheap internet web site–they sell discontinued/bad/crap versions.

I use the Teva Toachi 2 because:

  1. Lighter than Chacos
  2. Strapping is very good…very soft on the foot, very few hard points if you get the right kind
  3. Easy on, easy off

I use socks with them as I hike. Seal Skinz waterproof socks in cold weather (includes snow).

It’s a myth that people need huge hiking boots or ankle support. Hell, if it wasn’t a myth, just get a plaster cast from foot to knee, that’ll support ya and prevent ya from twisting an ankle.

After 600 miles of blister hell on the AT, I went to sandals and never regretted it for a minute. Started with Tevas, but I eventually switched over to Chacos because I can get about 1000 miles per pair vs. about 500 miles per pair of Tevas.
