Hiking Solo - The Colorado Trail

Hey, I’m thru hiking the CT for 6 weeks starting June 13th and I found some friends to hike with for the first 3 weeks but then will be by myself for the last 3 weeks. I know you are not really suppose to hike by yourself for safety reasons but I couldn’t find anyone to hike the whole trip with me. I have never hiked solo before for longer than a few days and am little nervous for the solo 3 week section. How likely is it to find other thru hikers along the trail to hike with or camp with at night during the sections from spring Pass to Durango?

Laura, I may catch up to you by mid-trip (going solo starting on the 20th).

Embrace your solo hike. You are more likely to have an unfortunate incident at the grocery store tomorrow than you are out on the trail in June. But no one ever tells you not to shop alone!

In 2005, I soloed southbound. I only saw about 5 other thru-hikers the entire time, three of which were heading in the opposite direction. You may have better luck hooking up, but I think the odds are low.

Regardless, enoy your hike. It’s a wonderful trail and even better experience!

I’ve heard several people, including women, say that solo on the CT is what they’d recommend. They talk about having more freedom to choose their pace and be in sync with their energy level. One of these was thru hiker, John Scott, who gave presentations at Denver area REI Stores. He said he loved his solo hike.
