Does TSA allow hiking sticks (collapsable style)through security or do they have to be checked as baggage? I’m flying in to Portland in two weeks and hope to have my pack and sticks as carry-on.

Usually not, as they’re generally considered to be ski poles which are required to be checked. YMMV, but I personally wouldn’t take the chance. The US Postal Service now offers a “long box” instead of the old poster tube. The box will fit a pair of collapsible poles with plenty of room leftover for other items like a knife, stakes, liquids, well-disguised alcohol stove, etc. The box shape also travels better than a tube.
