First, pick up the guidebook to the Superstitions, I can’t remember the publisher - but not Falcon. The edition I have has a photo of the Sups along with a gnarly picture of the Lost Dutchman. The guide has topos and also history of the area which I liked.

Siphon Draw is about 45 minutes east on 60, depends on traffic. Short and steep, though not well marked towards the top. I’ve picked my way up dozens of routes.

The Peralta trail to Fremont Saddle is also good (continue further east on 60, there used to be a trailhead sign… now there’s some development that you have to drive through). The trail is only 2-3 miles one way, but can be connected to others to extend it. I like the East Boulder Canyon Loop in the guidebook. Spectacular views of Weaver’s Needle from all directions. This trail can be crowded between the trailhead and the Saddle, keep going and you won’t see many people. I prefer to hike it during sunrise or sunset, as I usually get it to myself.

From the same trailhead you can do the Dutchman’s Loop, which takes you out by Miner’s Needle. If you’ve got a good spring bloom, this trail is covered in poppies.

Right in Phoenix are Camelback and Squaw Peak (which may be renamed by now - there was talk a few years back). Both are crowded, but if you’re just looking for a quick after work hike they suffice. South Mountain has a nice selection of trails. None are very challenging, but you can connect them to be as long as you’d like. Again, crowds.

Heading north on 89 are the Mazatzals, I liked starting at the Barnheardt (sp?) trailhead.

If you’re willing to head to Flag, check out Kendrick. It is shorter than Humphrey’s, but still around 10,000 feet. I found it a much prettier hike and nicer views. Plus, you’re close to the lava tubes which are well worth checking out.
