Hiking Umbrella

I met a hiker who was using an umbrella named something like “Coolie…” It is originally made in New Zealand, and costs about $20. It’s available online.

I Googled this item using keywords such as “Coolie, hiking umbrella, ultralight umbrella” but can’t find it. Does anyone know which website I can purchase this item from?

Thanks.

Amy, I haven’t heard about that one but the following companies make light umbrellas that AT and PCT hikers have used successfully:

GoLite
Montbell
Eagle Creek

The GoLite umbrella is very light and was quite popular in 2007 on the AT. I had a Montbell that was more compact, but slightly heavier, but worked very well too. Don’t know about the “Coolie”.

Before I start I would like to say hello to the Umbrella Lady as I found her to be a most remarkable person, and I hope to met both her and her husband again some day.

I used the golite umbrella in 2007 and was quite sastified with the results. While the umbrella was a little worn from 6 months of use on the trail I still use the same rain shield today and store it in my car for those days with inclemet weather. In short the umbrella enabled me to use a wind breaker (3 oz) and leave my rain jacket at home (10 oz.). Even in cold wet weather I found I generated plenty of heat while moving and did not miss the rain wear. Wind pants instead of rain pants saved me another 7 oz. so the umbrella turned out to be a weight savings option.

I have the Golite umbrella and was very impressed with how easy it was to handle. I stuck the handle into my front strap and let the umbrella shaft ride against my shoulder. It protected me from the rain and made hiking in the rain much more comfortable.

Details please! What “special features” make the golights your choice? I used 2 different $1 store mini’s on the AT
but they both after time got turned perminatly in-side-out by ridge top wind gusts. You can only repair them so many times b4 they wont close any more. I am considering investing a few more $$ in a “good” one for the PCT, if I can determin what “good” is?
