Hiking with Diabetes

I just was diagnosed Tuesday with Diabetes, and was wondering if anyone out there has done section hiking or thru-hiking with diabetes. Right now we are trying to see if I can control it with diet and pills, hopefully won’t need insulin shots although I did get them while I was in the hospital tuesday, weds and thurs. I am just curious situation. Thankfully, my glucometer is pretty small and light, so it won’t add much packweight!

Big boy…Good luck & hang in there guy. I know that I’ve seen posts in here re others that have hiked that are diabetic. Maybe do a search (look at bottom of this page) to see if you can find links.

as I call a very good friend. He and his wife thru hiked in '01 with us. He is diabetic and and was the lucky guy who got a trial pump for insulin. He got it after the hike but as for the on trail stuff, not a problem. He had insulin mail dropped and during the hike it was just another nodily function to deal with. Don’t worry BB, watch your diet and follow your doctor’s advice. You’ll be fine.

Like spacemonkey i too am a type I diabetic, anything i want to do i can. I thruhiked in 04, and carried prescriptions for my meds. In the thread spacemonkey listed i am mentioned because of my friends invention that i carried my meds in. You probably will have more problems off the trail w/ your sugars than you would on the trail
good luck :cheers

You need to go to the doctor and get his advice.

I’ve already talked with my doctor and they dont see a problem with the idea, i was just wondering about the practicality of it from people who may have tried it before.

To everyone who has replied so far, I thank you. Its been a frustrating few days so far. I feel like I am hungry all the time on this new diet -errr- new eating habits and my blood sugar is still not behaving but I am told it can take a bit for the pills to get it in the controlled range.

My doctor thinks the exercise will be good, as well as the weight loss, although when I described my meals from the last time I did hiking it made the doc cringe. No more Snickers! Oh well. I guess I will just have to plan more meals.
