Hitching in shenendoahs

imported

I am a section hiker, and so far I have completed everything south of Pennsylvania, saving the Shenendoahs for the fall. I plan to go out this week and was wondering, if I park at 1 place and hike 30 or so miles, is it easy to get a hitch back to my truck?

Thanks!

Yup. Hitching is easy in the park.I’ve done it a bunch of times over the years.

or…you could get in touch with one of us that are local to SNP; We’ll give you a ride back to wherever you want.

From what I saw, yellow blazing in SNP is fairly easy, part because the Skyline Drive parallels the AT. But, the best parts of the SNP are off the ridge and off the AT. So, if time allows, break out the map and plan some loops. That’s what I did years ago. I’d park at one place, and then do a bunch of side trails past waterfalls, and into the valleys. At the end of my 3 or 4 days, I’d hike the AT back to my car.

We hitchiked from SNP back to traildays in 2002 by going to one of the 2 big east/west highways that cuts through the park - I forget which one exactly. I know you aren’t going to want to go east/west but I never tried to do it on Skyline dr. It was easy to get the ride by mosying up to a camper and yogiing a ride. We did it this way instead of thumbing because it is illegal to hitch in the park, at least on Skyline drive. (Hitching is not illegal most other places on the AT) I have nothing against you hitching, but just be aware that you might make a ranger mad if you put out the thumb.

white oak canyons. BEAUTIFUL. there’s about nine waterfalls on the way down. It’s awesome. E-mail me if you want my number and need a ride.

You can yogi a ride most times of the year at overlooks, picnic areas, lodges, campgrounds, etc. Many do also hitchhike on the Drive, but it IS illegal and some (not all) Rangers will hassle you. Some might give you a RIDE, but others may give you a $50 citation. Just try to keep an eye out for white vehicles with green striping, or do the yogi thing which AFAIK doesn’t qualify as hitchhiking.

According to the SNP official website, parts of the trail are still closed. You should check it out before you go. Post here if you can – I’d be interested in hiking this soon as well.

I live at the southernmost end of SNP and Skyline Drive - if you are looking to do the section Rockfish Gap to Rt 33 or so give me a shout and I can try to work out a shuttle for ya

At least as up to date as a few days ago. By next weekend I’d expect another update. Here’s a link:
