Hi Marjorie, I’ve done a lot of horse packing over the past 37 years. All of it has been done as a part of my work or for enjoyment. Most of what I know has been learned through the school of hard knocks but occasionally I have sought the advice of seasoned veterans.
I have found that alfalfa pellets are about the best for packing in when visiting places where you cannot graze your horses. But if you feed only pellets it is pretty hard to take enought to stay for any length of time without grazing your horses. There are places where you can graze your horses so check ahead of time. Do you know what high-lining horses is? If you have other questions please ask, I’ll be glad to share what I know. Muleskinner
