Hot Weather Food

Hot weather and hot food don’t seem to mix when backpacking in the heat and humidity. After a long trip last weekend with temps in the 80s and humidity skyrocketing, the last thing I wanted to eat was the ramen and rice I packed.

Anyone have suggestions about what to eat on hot weather days?

When the weather warms we ditch the stove and do bagels with tuna salad; a few relish packs and some mayos on everything bagels is kills. Anything on a bagel is killer; sharp cheddar and pepperoni, pb and cheetoes, slice of pizza between a bagel, what ever.

If you put the packaged food in a large mouth bottle and add water several hours before the meal-make lunch when you get up, you’ll have cold food for break. Sometimes we’ll make a loaf of non-spoil sandwhiches on whole wheat. Alternate cheese and beans spread and put them all back in the bag to keep fresh longer.

My favorite thing on a hot day was to find a cold stream and make up some of my powdered milk. Then add raison bran or Corn Pops or granola or whatever kind of cereal I had…a nice cool snack. Also good was pudding. I would mix up the mix, then add the vanilla or chocolate pudding mix. Also nice and cool if you can find some cold water.

I like the tortilla wraps, some foil packaged tuna, and mayo in the individual packets.

With regards to deli meats and salads mentioned by Old & In The Way, how long would you opine they would remain safe sans refrigeration? I would imagine some meats like salami, etc. would fare better than others (like say chicken or turkey) but one of my bigger fears is food poisoning. Am I just being overly cautious? I’ve tried the foil packages of chicken and turkey and especially like the Starkist brand of tuna that’s seasoned – Sweet & Spicy is great. I appreciate your advice. I am always learning new things from these forums.

I always chose popsicles. they can be sticky if you let them melt. so you really should try to eat them within minutes of getting to the trail head.

ps do not buy in advance and ship them. nothing but trouble.

The little cartons of applesauce, although heavy, were a great treat for me. And…the one time that I had no water, I was able to drink my applesauce and it helped me mentally until the next water source. I carried applesauce throughout my entire hike and did have one instance when the lid got punctured and created quite a mess. But…to me it was worth having the special treat.

Does the mayo in the individual packets still stay good in the really, really warm days of summer?
