How bad is Water in the South?

I spoke with a shuttle providor in northern VA last night who said they are drinking bottled water instead of well water. She said the water table is just too low to trust the quality.

Has anybody been through VA to see the effects on the streams? How about further south?

Water was OK from Springer to Fontana, as of last Saturday.
BTW, it rained pretty hard last Fri. night and Sat. in the
Cheoah Bald-Fontana area. However, there is a long-term drought in Ga, W. NC according to locals. Lakes look low, although it may be the TVA drawing them down for normal spring rain management.

I haven’t heard any negative reports from anyone concerning the water sources in the Georgia section of the AT this year so far. The later in the season it gets this may change, but as of now the springs and streams are running well.

Have hiked from Springer to Franklin from 4/2-4/12. No water problems so far. Plenty of springs running while I went through. I can only remember one dry stretch of about 5 miles when I was low on water. Course there has been a lot of rain lately in area so later that may change.
