How cold will it get?

I’m planning on starting a sobo CDT hike in mid to late June of 08. What kind of temperatures should I prepare for. I’ve done some reasearch and found some average and record temperatures of different places along the CDT. From that I surmised looking at a possiblity of 0 degrees F. I know there is no better knowledge than hiking the trail itself so any experience is appreciated.

The only advice I can give is to be prepared my friend. You’ve gone ahead and done the research so now make a critical decison to what bag to bring. I got away with using a 20’ degree which suited me just fine.

Enjoy the wonders of this wonderful and unexplored trail.

Last year we had record high temps in MT in late June. The 15F bag was way too warm, but it was good to be prepared. We did have one day of blowing snow on a high pass.

Er… as I post as PAUL MAGS, I’m curious as to why someone posted as me. Looks like someone copy and pasted a section of previous advice I gave.

Not sure why someone would want to impersonate a short, squat and none-too-bright former CDT hiker.

If you are out past mid-September, be prepared for some seriously cold temps - and some days in the 60’s. When crossing the desert, be prepared for some really hot temps. (We didn’t actually have bad heat during the desert stretches, but folks ahead and behind did.) The past two years have had some very hot weather in July. But when we hiked south in 1999 we had snow on the 4th of July and freezing temps in the Winds in early August. Every year is a bit different. As Mags (?) said, be prepared for both hot and cold.

On both of our thruhikes, we used 20 degree bags until about the 12th of September, then switched to warmer winter bags - and in both cases we needed them immediately.

Well…I really did say that in the past. Someone copied and pasted a portion of a previous post I made and did it under my name. Still not sure why???

HEre is what I wrote on CDT-L

“In any case, even in New Mexico, you are in the high desert. The nights will probably be cool. I suggest one standard three-season bag (15F or 20F, depending)
for the entire trip. I would not to use a lighter bag personally. Northern New Mexico is fairly high as well. Again, a NoBo may have a different take.”

(Really is Mags…I am kinda short, squat and none-too-bright . :D)

In any situation you should consider all types of weather conditions. Like what Ginny posted.

Who exactly is impersonating me???

I appreciate all the info. I guess I will go with Western Mountaineering Versilite or Alpinelite. Guess I’d better start saving my cash.
