How do Topical Journals Entries Go On-Line?

Hello to All,

While engaged in thru hikes, how do people convey fresh experiences to Trailjournals.com?

Do they hand write entries on to paper journals while in camp? Or do they utilize gizmos like Palm Pilots while in camp?

Assuming that handwritten journals are the norm while in camp, how do the entries on paper change to electronic versions?

From what kinds of locations are these electronic entries upload to this web site?

A step by step explanation of how this process occurs would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Hey, Debsconeag, you ever done the Debsconeag loop trail out by Fifth Debsconeag Ponds? A truly awesome trail.

Hello Kineo Kid,

Yeah, I’ve been exploring that area for almost a decade. Before the trail went in, I was bushwhacking it.

Actually, I am still exploring in there. Last Fall, my friend and I tromped around the back country between Rainbow Lake and Nahmakanta Lake. It was mostly off trail movement using a compass and topo.

Later, while drying clothes at a laundry in Millinocket, I ran into a couple of thru hikers. I guess a bug was planted in my head, because now I am planning an AT hike beginning in March.

But long after the AT excursion, I’ll be heading back to the ‘Deb’ Lakes.

Here is an attempt to answer your question. First, some of this has been discuss previously in this forum, so might want to do a search for laptops, journals, transcribers, etc and read what you pull up from that search. Think that will help a bunch.

Trail journals happen in many ways. Some people write notes and mail them home and their loved one (transcriber), who types in, spell checkes, and uploads to trail journals.

You might want to ask Leif and trailjournals personal for some imput on your question. Just email them.

Some people visit public libraries along the way and type in their trailjournal entries and upload them. Problem is some places have libraries with computers you can use, some don’t. Also computer time is generally limited.

Laptops are used by some but not many—too bulky to carry and too much weight.

Palm held types of computer, very light but limited are used quite a bit. Email uploads from them to wherever, is edited, spell checked and uploaded to trail journals.

You can also keep a running log and mail it home every so often and do your journal when you finish.

Many people like to follow along in your writings and read journals as you hike. Some journals have hundreds of thousands of readers (yes hundreds of thousands).

So there are many ways you can do it. I like the fresh prespective of journal entries done immediately—you know how you hurt, you know how you feel----but six months later, the moment will have escaped you.

Hope all of this helps.

See you out there. :cheers
