How do you return from Katadin?

I need to decide now because I’ll probably take a flight from Maine to Tampa or NY,and from there
London and home (Israel).
I need to decide exactly where I’m going to take flights from (VUSA), so here goes:
How do you “exit” Katadin? where to? any shuttle? buses? train? if I decide to cross to Canada (Quebec) where is the nearest border control point?

How to return from Katahdin is adequately explained in Wingfoot’s Handbook and the ALDHA Companion. So, if you haven’t gotten one of these publications yet, you should have.

In summary what you need to dois:

From the base of Katahdin, usually at Katahdin Stream Campground, ask others (day hikers) there for a ride into Millinocket. It’s not that hard. There is basically only one road into and out of the Park, and it goes into this town.

In Millinocket, there is a hostel where you can shower and spend the night. The next morning, you need to take a taxi to the bus stop in Medway near I-95. The bus is an express bus where you can relax and leave the driving to others. This will bring you to Bangor, where most people change to another express bus for Portland or Boston. In Boston, you can either fly out, or catch a train for points south and west.

If you want to get to Canada, then the shortest route is probably US 201. As you see when you cross it at Carratunk, it’s not that major a road. So, I suspect that if you are flying oversees, then you should plan on departing from either Boston or NYC>

Thanks Peaks for the info, the guides should arrive here (Israel) soon, I hope.
Thanks for the info about Canada ,I was planing on visiting friends in Quebec and as an alien it might be a problem crossing and stayin (and then leaving) without a permit, that’s why I need to know the closest border point.

Zammy, there is also good information on the ATC website. This page lists transportation information, including airports, buses, and even a link to shuttles to and from Springer and Katahdin.

Best of luck!

From what I’ve read, most people don’t worry about it and it works out okay for them.

I’d start thinking about that once I hit Maine or maybe a little before that, but not early on in the hike or before the thru attempt is even started.

Many people plan way too much. It’s okay to plan, but for goodness sakes, leave a little something to chance. The unexpected and unplanned things in life are great and what makes life so interesting. Or would you rather “And when I am 76 years old, three months and five days, I am going to die and I am going to be buried in … by … and …will be at my funeral, etc. etc.” Live a little, don’t plan so much.

See you out there. :cheers
