How early SMNP hike

imported

Coming from out west to hike the AT through the SMNP. Is there a typical time the trail is mostly clear of snow? Hoping to make this trip in April or May. Plan to go south to north, unless someone suggests otherwise.

I ran into a number of SMNP SOBO hikers in 05 who informed me then that it was easier to go south bound (I asked). Something to do with the terrain being easier to hike over in that direction. I do not know how true this fact is but, grab a topograpghical map of the area and take a look see. I would like to know what you think when done. I have that one in my sights for a future “to do” type hike.

The Smokies can definitely be clear of snow and ice especially by late April and into May, but they are also capable of receiving heavy snowfall especially in early April and sometimes in May. Very cold temperatures are also possible as are warm temperatures. Your best bet is to follow weather for the region for a week or so prior to your trip. Also contact the backcountry ranger office and ask about trail conditions before you leave.

As for the easiest way to hike the AT through the park it is to start in the middle at Newfound Gap and hike either direction then come back to the middle and hike the other direction, but this is not very practical. Going North from Fontana Dam there is considerably elevation gain with lots of upo and down all the way to Clingman’s Dome. After Newfound Gap northbound the trail is very moderate with far less elevation gain and loss until the last 8 - 10 miles when you begin a long steady descent into Davenport Gap.

I hiked from Clingmans to Newfound on April 5th last year and met several nb hikers. It was shirtsleeve weather on Sunday and snowbound the next day.

The road up to Clingmans from Newfound is closed until March 31st so factor in the 8 extra miles for early starts. You’ll past Mt Collins shelter.

Cade’s cove road is closed for a couple months for repairs too so that may or may not affect your travels into the park. (According to a report I received.)

the winter weather in the Smokies is a crap shot. In 2005 I went tkhru in early April and got hammered by a snow storm that closed down the road tkhru the park. Last year we go thru between March 6 to 13. Beautiful weather to Newfound Gap. People sunning themselves along the trail. From the Gap north we had most drizzle but the temps never dropped below 50 degrees. So you might as well take ykour chances unless you want to wait until May.

I’d go S to N. Save the most exciting scenery for last.

I hiked in late May 08. The nights were cool and I was glad I had a 20 degree bag. The Smokies seem to have thier own ecosystem, so the weather is very unpredictable. I chose northbound because of the shuttle for Knoxville airport. It was easier to get to from Davenport Gap.

Looks like I came to the right place for good beta. Thank you.

I am flexible, so I’ll shoot for the first part of May and monitor the weather.

I appreciate your way of thinking Swamp Fox: “I’d go S to N. Save the most exciting scenery for last.”

I thru hiked the park in early April twice. In 2006 the weather was comfortable for that time of year and in 2009 it was cold and wet. I’d recommend hiking in mid to late May. By that time you should miss the annual thru hiker crowds at the shelters. I’ve only hiked this section northbound I’m not sure if the terrain is more forgiving or not going southbound. Either way it is a beautiful hike, enjoy.

Yep, havta agree with “swampfox” on this one… you just never know. I was in the big 2005 clan that got help up at hot Springs… there muxt of been over 200 hikers in town in mid April… Smokies closed due to two foot drifts… Hot Springs ran out of beer at the gas station in 1 day. Paddlers pub put up a big tent for us all and we drank there.

Just depends on Weather patterns… Id think this year that by end of april you should good.

best on your hike! :boy
