How far from Harper's Ferry?

How far south of HF is David Lesser shelter? Is the trail between HF and the shelter difficult? How good are water sources? I’m planning a hike in this area in a couple weeks, I’ve never been to that part of the trail. Any info about the hiking around Harper’s Ferry would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you looked in the AT Data book, it’s 8.6 miles from Harpers Ferry to David Lesser shelter. If you look at the profile on the map, the AT climbs about 700 feet in 1 1/2 miles between the Route 340 bridge and Loudoun Heights. After that, it’s a gradual descent onto Keys Gap, and a gradual climb out of Keys Gap.

It’s pretty easy.

You won’t need more than a couple qts of water, and you can carry that much.

I don’t have the Data Book, so thanks for that info. This hike is kind of a last minute thing. I have to deliver a car to Florida and I’m trying to find a nice, fairly quick hike that I can get in along the way. I figured Harper’s Ferry would be a good spot. I’ve never been there before. If anyone has other suggestions for a good overnight south of HF, I’m all ears. The only hiking I’ve done in the south is in the north end of Shennandoah NP near Front Royal, so I’m eager to do some more southern hiking. I appreciate your help Peaks and Scamp. Given the choice, I would probably do a loop hike in Shenandoah National Park. The best parts of SNP are off the ridge and therefore off the AT. I’d spend one day going down some side trails into the scenic canyons and valleys, and then come back up onto the ridge and back to my car using the AT.

I think there is a book titled loop hikes in SNP
