How to get to LAX from Kennedy Meadows

Hello,
I will be hiking with my friend from Agua Dulce to Kennedy Meadows. She will be continuing N from there, but I will need a ride (or way) back to LAX either on/near June 9 or 10, 2012. A different airport would be fine, but it would have to be a major one, maybe Reno? I have no clue what is the closest/easiest option to KM, but I can’t afford to fly from an airport like Inyokern unfortunately. I am trying to figure out how to do this. I have looked up buses and can’t find anything. The nearest Greyhound seems to be in Barstow. I will need to get home somehow. Any help appreciated!

I fly out of Inyokern on business a couple times a month. If you continue on United the cost is reasonable to anywhere in the country. Doing only IYK - LAX (or even a round trip) is unbelievably expensive. For example, I can do one way IYK to Washington Dulles for $655. One way IYK to LAX (same day - 123 miles) is $691. Doesn’t make any sense.

I think Reno would probably be your best bet. I believe there is bus service from Independence but hopefully someone else can confirm.

Yes there is bus service that goes to the Reno airport. It’s run by the Eastern Sierra Transit Authority and runs up and down Highway 395 from Ridgecrest to Reno. It services all the towns (and a few points in between towns as well).

From Kennedy Meadows you’ll probably have to hitch a ride down to Hwy. 395 and either south Ridgecrest or north to Lone Pine to catch the bus.

To get to LA, the bus runs also down to Lancaster, where you can catch the LA Metrolink train. The train does not run directly to LAX but it does go to the Burbank airport, which has many flights to west coast destinations.

Hope this all helps. Have a great hike!
