Hunters? - Appalachian Trail

Has anybody ever had problems with hunters? I was on a two day hike and heard something hit outside my tent. When I went to go see what it was there was an arrow stuck in a tree a few feet from me. A couple of minutes later a hunter came buy and apologized. He told me that one got away from him. I told him hunting wasn’t permited where I was and he said “I told you it got away from me.” I didn’t report him to the game commission but was tempted.

You should have reported him. No point in ignoring the issue on the trail only to turn around and complain about it on the internet.

Sounds like this happened in Penna. As a former avid hunter for years (rifle 20 yrs / bow 30yrs), I find this incident very disturbing. The effective range of a bow is very limited in forest (estimate 30 yards +/-). This guy had to know where your tent was and had to be drawing the bow back or at full draw before releasing while aiming in your general direction. Bowhunting can get very boring with hours sitting in a blind or tree stand. People do weird things to occupy the the mind, but a bow is a lethal weapon and should always treated as such. The AT passes through many state game lands and state forest in PA and there are no rules I know of for not hunting within “x” feet of the trail. As a hiker I always wear blaze orange in fall especially after Oct 1. Would I have probably reported this guy – probably not, but he would have gotten a good piece of my mind.
