Hunting in the Highlands?

Thinking of backpacking Grayson Highlands this weekend in SW Virginia…does anyone know if there’s hunting allowed there?

Hunting is not allowed in Grayson Highlands State Park but is allowed in the surrounding Mt. Rogers Nat. Rec. Area.

No hunting is allowed in Virginia on Sundays, so that is a fairly safe hiking day. But during hunting season, I wear blaze orange whenever I hike at all times just to be on the safe side. Recommend you do the same, state park or not. When these hunters get into the mountains, they can easily wonder over into state park areas and not even know it. And if they are out for a few days at a hunting camp, they might not even know it’s Sunday.

See you out there. :cheers

I was hiking through the area last year in early November. While I was in the State Park near Massie Gap, a hunter walks down the trail with a bow and arrow in hand. The funny thing was that it was an Indian Summer Trail and I had scene at least 30 people on Wilburn Ridge. Cover yourself in orange. They also say that there are no hunters in Shenandoah, but that is also unfortunately not the case.

Many, if not most, hunters are conscientious. I’ve done a fair bit of hiking with hunters around, both on the AT and off. Enough of them, however, worry me, to make me generally distrustful. There was the guy with the crossbow standing on the AT in High Point State Park, in an area posted against hunting. I’ve also seen a lot of hunters on posted private land, who either didn’t know or didn’t care that they were trespassing. There is no hunting in Jersey on Sundays, but I still hear the guns in the distance. Definitely wear blaze orange, and make lots of noise.

Ok, called Grayson Highlands today. They DO allow hunting in certain areas…more precicely the areas that I was going to hike in. So, plans change :frowning:

But wouldn’t they shoot the cute little ponies???:bawling

You betcha there were plenty of hunters out in SW Virginia! We were on the trail 11/8-12 and the guns were a-blazing! We even heard shots on Sunday. Probably the majority are responsible people, but be sure to wear lots of blaze orange…the 2 ladies with gray hair got orange caps at Wally World so their heads would not look like deer tails

One of the hunters said that you need to be extra careful…stay together, making noise, etc., within a mile and a half of road crossings. Of course, that means you need to know where you are…:tongue
