HYOH - Appalachian Trail

someone anonymously left violet beauregard a message on her guestbook, regarding aquablazing, and how he would report her if she laid claim to a thru hike.
it stinks that anyone would suck the joy out of violet’s journey, worse that he/she didnt have the guts to leave a name.
not everybodys in it for the patch, dude, lighten up and find your own life.

Dude.

  1. It’s the internet.
  2. When you stop hiking and take a boat ride, then get on the trail again someplace else, you didn’t walk the whole thing.
  3. People who tell other people to HYOH are the same kind who tell people other obvious things, unsolicited.
  4. Boat, car, mule, ass rides are not part of the AT, except across the Kennebec.
  5. The thing speaks for itself.

if she goes back and hikes the missing portion its perfectly legitimate. and if she doesnt go back, but doesnt apply for 2000 miler status, how does this diminish your own accomplishment?and why was violet singled out, out of the dozens that have aquablazed this year?why should this affect someone else at all?she is well aware of the “rules”. sad that some feel they need to be preemptively enforced.
i am familiar with the internet.

Moral of the story: Don’t make things public if you don’t want to be called out on them.

Beyond that, what Blanket said: it’s the internet and the rules are what they are. It’s up to her and others’ consciences as to what they will claim. Some have more creative license in their consciences than others.

i agree about the rules being the rules.but less than half the people who have made it as far as she had will finish. if she doesnt finish, the whole point is moot.if she doesnt go back and hike the missing piece and then applies for 2000 mile status anyway, well then thats the time to call her out. not before shes done anything wrong. she was aware of the rules when she chose to paddle.
and yeah, i know about the internet

Hike: an outdoor activity which consists of WALKING in natural environments…
Aqua, yellow, and blue may be an option, but unless you walk past every white blaze, I wouldn’t claim it HIKING the entire length of the AT.

It’s a 2,000 miler patch. If ya want it to be an end to end patch call it that. The patch says 2,000 miles. 100 or more miles of Aqua or whatever still comes out to 2,000 miles. Besides, it’s an honor system program anyhow and who knows how many people have fudged a little along the way. I wish I had a dollar for every hiker that took the snowmobil short cut track from WHL to Abol Bridge.

It’s your hike and no one elses. If you want to walk the whole way, so be it. If you want to skip some, go ahead. If you want to aquablaze that’s your business and no one elses. If you want to apply for a 2000 mi. certificate and don’t walk the whole way than you are just a lyer and only you will know if you are a thru-hiker or not.
